There are many ways to manage codependency. I say manage because until this point, I have never considered codependency something that needed curing. It is learnt behaviour based on childhood trauma and developmental and relational trauma, basically teaching the child that they have to ‘give to get‘. However, my opinion has changed dramatically in the last few years and I am now fully of the opinion that you can drive codependency out of your life for good. Let‘s say that again:

Codependents are generally afraid of personal autonomy because it means they must look at themselves, where they have found it easier to look at the external world for validation. It is not an easy journey to turn that focus inward. I started my own personal journey to personal autonomy by asking myself the question: ‘ What have I been denying myself while I have been trying to fix/rescue/enable others?‘. I came up with a whole list of things and have been happily reconnecting with a lot of them. However, it‘s not about distancing yourself. It‘s about respecting yourself and you cannot hope to have a sustainable relationship without personal autonomy.
Personal autonomy involves the ability to make independent decisions and govern one’s actions based on personal values, beliefs, and preferences. It encompasses self-governance, which is the power to direct one’s life without external control or coercion, and independence, allowing freedom from external interference or pressure. It also includes self-reflection, the capacity to evaluate one’s desires, goals, and values, and informed decision-making, which involves making choices based on a thorough understanding of the options and potential outcomes.
In the context of relationships, personal autonomy can be challenged by dynamics that undermine individual independence. For instance, in a relationship where one partner excessively relies on the other for validation and decision-making, personal autonomy can be compromised. The lack of autonomy might lead to an imbalance where one partner’s needs and desires are consistently prioritized over the other’s, fostering a dependency that hinders the ability to make independent choices. This dynamic can suppress personal growth and self-determination, creating a cycle where both individuals might struggle to assert their autonomy and maintain a healthy balance of interdependence and independence.
Attaining personal autonomy during the process of recovery entails a series of measures aimed at regaining self-reliance and self-control. Commence with recognising and comprehending your individual requirements, aspirations, and principles, distinct from those of others. Self-awareness is essential for establishing personal boundaries and ensuring that your behaviour is in line with your authentic self.
Engage in introspection to identify recurring behavioural habits that may have undermined your independence. Contemplate previous decisions and relationships to comprehend the extent to which external factors have influenced your capacity to make autonomous options. This revelation can direct you towards more beneficial behaviours.
Develop the skill of autonomously making decisions, even in little circumstances. This fosters self-assurance in your capacity to manage your own life. Explore and pursue activities and hobbies that bring you delight and provide an outlet for expressing your unique identity. Engaging in these activities can strengthen your self-identity and establish a basis for independent decision-making.
Establish and uphold distinct limits in relationships to safeguard your autonomy. Express your wants and preferences confidently and make sure that your limits are honoured. Undertaking this step is crucial in order to cultivate mutual respect and safeguard your independence from being undermined.
Obtain assistance from reliable acquaintances, relatives, or experts who can offer advice and motivation without diminishing your autonomy. Their assistance might be quite beneficial in strengthening your dedication to personal development and independence.
Direct your attention towards cultivating self-sufficiency by acquiring expertise and capabilities that augment your capacity to move through life autonomously. This may involve engaging in educational pursuits, advancing one’s job, or seeking personal development opportunities that enable individuals to assert authority over their destiny.
Finally, cultivate self-compassion and patience as you strive to regain control of your own autonomy. Recovery is a prolonged and incremental journey, and it is crucial to recognise and commemorate your advancements as you proceed. By implementing these measures, you can systematically restore your personal autonomy and cultivate a more wholesome and harmonious lifestyle.
